
Tahir has accumulated almost three decades of experience in sociology, politics, and Islamic studies. He is Professor of Criminology and Global Justice at Aston University. His previous appointments include a Professorship in Radicalisation Studies at Leiden University, a Professorship in Sociology at Istanbul University, and an Associate Professorship in Sociology at the University of Birmingham.
Tahir is a Fellow of both the Academy of Social Sciences and the Royal Society of Arts. He served as the Scientific Coordinator for the European Union-funded Horizon 2020 RIA Drive project, which investigated the influence of social exclusion on far-right and Islamist radicalisation. His recent and forthcoming books include Capitalism, State Power, and the Production of Extremism (2025); Ethnicity, Religion, and Muslim Education in a Changing World (co-edited, 2024); and The Routledge International Handbook on Social Exclusion and Radicalisation (co-edited, 2026).
