Prof. Tariq Modood MBE

Tariq is Professor of Sociology at the University of Bristol, a founding former Director of the Centre for the Study of Ethnicity and Citizenship and co-founder of the journal Ethnicities. Author of 35+ books and 350+ articles, he was awarded an MBE in 2001 and elected as a Fellow at The British Academy in 2017.

A top-cited UK scholar, he has advised the UK government, the APPG on British Muslims and the European Commission on Racism and Intolerance (ECRI). His latest works include The New Governance of Religious Diversity (2024).

He was also recognised with the 2025 Boniuk Institute Senior Scholar Award, in recognition of his scholarly contribution to the public understanding of religion, pluralism and tolerance.
