Equi was invited to Downing Street on 27 October for discussions with Prime Minister Andy Burnham on building a more cohesive and inclusive Britain.
Managing Director Professor Javed Khan OBE represented Equi at the hour-long meeting, which also included Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government Angela Rayner MP and representatives from Muslim communities across the UK.
The discussion addressed themes at the heart of Equi’s research: strengthening community relations, tackling anti-Muslim hatred and improving faith literacy in public policy. It also explored the government’s role in ensuring that British Muslims’ contribution to national life is recognised and reflected in a more positive public narrative.
Equi brings the voices and experiences of British Muslim communities into these discussions, connecting evidence from our research with practical solutions that strengthen cohesion and benefit society as a whole.
The Prime Minister acknowledged the need to address divisions that have developed over past decades and outlined the government’s commitment to tackling them. Participants also heard that a new advisory role would be established to support this work, alongside a national action plan to address anti-Muslim hostility.
Reflecting on the meeting, Professor Javed Khan OBE said:
“Constructive engagement between communities and government is essential if we are to build trust, strengthen cohesion, and ensure that all citizens feel valued, respected and heard. I look forward to seeing meaningful progress in the months ahead.”
