Equi held a parliamentary launch of its groundbreaking report “UK arts and culture and the role of British Muslims” at the Houses of Parliament on 12th February 2025.
The event brought together policymakers from across party lines, civil society, and sector leaders to discuss the economic and social power of the arts. It was a great opportunity to highlight that British Muslim creatives aren’t just consumers of art but are shaping the UK’s cultural fabric, generating economic and cultural capital that benefits everyone.
Equi’s report calls for targeted action to help ensure British Muslim artists are recognised, supported, and empowered to contribute fully to the UK’s creative industries. Managing Director, Prof. Javed Khan OBE, reflected that “The event illustrated how Arts and Culture should not be an afterthought, but the catalyst for winning hearts and minds. Harnessed correctly, this can be a powerful driver for uplifting our communities, building bridges, and fostering social cohesion.”
Our thanks to the All Party Parliamentary Group on British Muslims for hosting the event, and to fellow speakers, Afzal Khan CBE MP, Sarah Owen MP, Baroness Sayeeda Warsi, and BAFTA-winning and Oscar-nominated Director Farah Nabulsi for joining us, to everyone in the APPG Team who helped organise (Muhbeen Hussain, Hasaam Latif, and many more), and to all those attending for such a fantastic turnout.
